Sophomore year of high school, a cool senior girl told me I reminded her of Lydia. I had never been so flattered.

Annie was a regal dog I knew only as “The Wolf.” She spent most days surveying my neighborhood from under this tree. My first reaction to seeing that she’d died was, “A drunk driver must have swerved into the yard! Where are the tire tracks?!” Because although she was never tethered, she was way too cool to bark at anyone, much less run into the street. Like I said, regal (or maybe bored, but in the most noble way possible).
Instead, I learned from the LA Times article stapled to the trunk of her tree that she’d been stung by a bee and gone into anaphylactic shock. It sucked in My Girl and it sucks in real life. I’m sorry for her humans and for all the kids who liked to stop and pet her. Including the grownup ones like me.
Hancock Park had those wonderfully tacky Davids, but we had Annie and it’s nice to know she’ll be missed.

On Wednesday night, Caleb Medley advanced out of the first round of the Denver Comedy Works annual “New Faces Contest.” On Thursday night, Medley took his pregnant wife, Katie (due date: today), to see the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.
That midnight screening. The Medleys were victims of the Aurora massacre.
Caleb was shot in the face, losing an eye and suffering brain damage. He’s in an Aurora hospital in a coma. Katie and unborn baby were unharmed.
They do not have health insurance.
Friends, family and loved ones have set up a site to raise money to cover an estimated $500,000 in hospital bills for them both.
